The summer can be very demanding on your mechanical equipment and the best time to make sure everything is in good working order is prior to hot part of the season. It also the time when you need the most performance out of your tower. For those two very important reasons, you want to have this maintenance done now.
We will start with mechanical equipment. Because the summer requires a cooling tower to run at full speed and with no down time, it is best to insure that it is in good working order before hand. We recommend that you have a PM performed prior to summer and again after summer because of the demand on it for several months. Below is a list of what we recommend whether a cooling tower company provides the service or you handle it internally, these are the necessary tasks.
Change Gear Oil
Drain oil and replace with manufacturers recommended grade oil.
Drive shaft Alignment
Align the drive shafts to manufacturers’ specifications with dial indicators.
Fan Blade Pitch
Use an Exacta-Pitch to pitch the fans to draw optimum air- flow. Set to within 10% of nameplate amperage.
Fan Blade Tracking
Set the fan blades to track at the same elevation.
Fan Stack Centering
Round out the fan stack to allow equal tip clearance.
Tip Clearance Adjustment
Adjust tip clearance to manufacturers recommended distance between the fan blade and fan stack. Install tip seals on stacks where adjustment is not applicable.
Hardware Torque
Using a torque wrench sets each of the equipments hardware at manufacturers recommended torque.
The other extremely important factor to consider for the summer is performance. Your tower will have the maximum hot load on it during this time of year. One of the most important factors is proper water distribution. Without proper water distribution you will lose performance and at a time when you cannot afford it. We have a list of recommendations below.
Clean Hot Water Basin (Cross flow)
Sealing Hot Water Basin (Cross flow)
Clean & Flush Distribution System Header, Laterals, Repair leaks, Separated Laterals and Damaged Headers (Counter Flow)
Repair Missing or Broken Nozzles (All Towers)
Don't take a risk! Make sure that your tower has been serviced prior to the summer heat. If you are not sure if your tower needs to be serviced, feel free to contact us and we would be happy to provide you with a no obligation, free cooling tower inspection. Our goal is to make sure that all companies are informed and prepared for the coming months.
